Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam, born and raised in Mumbai, always dreamed of becoming a doctor. Due to his mother's chronic illnesses and frequent hospital visits, he spent more time in hospitals than at home, playing with stethoscopes instead of toys. This early exposure to the medical field led Dr. Kadam to pursue and complete his MBBS and post-graduation in Pediatrics.
Upon completing his studies, Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam had the opportunity to start his medical practice in Mumbai, but his heart yearned for something more meaningful. Determined to serve those in need, he chose to practice in Nighoj, a remote village in Ahmednagar district. Despite opposition from family and friends, who viewed this decision as a step backward, Dr. Kadam was resolute in his mission.
In July 2004, Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam founded Vatsalya Children’s Hospital, the first pediatric hospital in Nighoj. When he started his practice, he was the only pediatrician in the area, catering to a vast radius of 30-40 km. Initially, the hospital was a modest four-bed facility, and the concept of a dedicated children’s hospital was unfamiliar to the villagers. With no diagnostic facilities available, Dr. Kadam relied on his clinical judgment and trained local villagers as paramedical staff to assist in the hospital.
Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam encountered numerous challenges while establishing his pediatric practice in the remote area. The villagers were deeply rooted in superstitions, making it difficult to change their views on child-rearing practices. Additionally, local quacks viewed Dr. Kadam with suspicion. Despite these obstacles, he gradually earned the trust of the community, and parents began bringing their children to Vatsalya Hospital with confidence.
Recognizing the high rate of neonatal deaths due to poverty and inadequate care, Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam took the initiative to establish the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Nighoj. Managing the NICU without trained staff and lab services was a significant challenge, but Dr. Kadam’s dedication ensured that every baby was saved. The joy of handing a healthy baby back to its mother became one of the most rewarding aspects of his work.
Today, under the leadership of Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam, Vatsalya Hospital has grown into a 20-bed pediatric facility equipped with a state-of-the-art NICU. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Kadam has dedicated himself entirely to the well-being of the children in Nighoj. Despite the absence of urban luxuries and the challenges of rural life, the satisfaction of seeing healthy children return home makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Even after two decades, Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam remains the only pediatrician in the entire taluka. Many doctors have considered establishing a practice in Nighoj but were deterred by the lack of financial incentives and urban comforts. Dr. Kadam’s parents, who initially opposed his decision, have now moved to Nighoj and become integral to his work. Although Dr. Kadam has not published papers or delivered lectures, he is content knowing that he has made a real difference in the lives of countless children.
The journey of Dr. Sunil Vishnu Kadam from Mumbai’s bustling hospitals to a rural clinic in Nighoj has been both challenging and deeply fulfilling. The dream nurtured in childhood has come to fruition, not in a city’s glamorous hospital but in a modest facility in a remote village, highlighting the power of dreams and the impact one person can make by following
